In my brief stint in Microsoft, I worked on a project that was called Services For Linux. It was a project to get the posix commands working on the command line.
I was pretty excited as I had been a long time user of Linux already, and thought it was quite rad to have this thing in linux iteself. I had already been using cygwin shells before in other companies. However, the excitement turned sour quite early on due to the attitude within the company. If there was a bug, it was mostly marked as 'as per design', and any argument that this is not how it works on linux was met with 'We are Microsoft. We do it our way'.
So, I am quite surprised and excited to see that Microsoft partnered with Canonical to get this in Windows10. So, far the demo seems to show it as an actual full fledged bash shell, instead of the lame implementation the SFU team was working on.
As usual, expect quite a big backlash from the online Linux community towards Canonical.

That isn’t some sort of exclusive unit, some sort of jar, or maybe Linux application produced intended for Microsoft windows (like Cygwin). As a substitute, Microsoft windows 10 gets some sort of Microsoft windows Subsystem intended for Linux, which often will be based upon Microsoft’s discontinued Challenge Astoria be employed by managing Operating system blog with Microsoft windows.
ReplyDeleteVisualize the item for the reason that other connected with Vino. Though Vino means that you can function Microsoft windows apps upon Linux, this Microsoft windows Subsystem intended for Linux means that you can function Linux apps upon Microsoft windows.
Microsoft worked as kitchen staff having Canonical to present the whole Ubuntu-based Get-together cover of which extends atop that subsystem. From a technical perspective, that isn’t Linux by any means. Linux would be the actual computer kernel, and this isn’t readily available in this article. As a substitute, that means that you can function this Get-together cover in addition to this also binaries you’d generally operated with Ubuntu Linux. Free-software purists typically state the standard Linux computer need to be termed “GNU/Linux” mainly because it’s definitely many GNU application managing within the Linux kernel. This Get-together cover you’ll receive is very simply just the many GNU immensities along with application.
